John Spencer was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. After graduating Exeter High School, he attended the University of New Hampshire. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, completing his Bachelor of Science degree as a Physician Assistant in 1986. He completed his Master of Science degree in Human Services and Counseling at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky in 1992. Mr. Spencer completed a fellowship in Emergency Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington in 1994. In 1995 he completed the Master of Medical Science degree at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Spencer spent twenty-one years in the US Army and served in the Persian Gulf War. As a physician assistant in the military, he gave medical care to active duty and retiree families. His military assignments involved working in clinics and state of the art hospitals, as well as in primitive and isolated conditions. Through his deployments he acquired first hand experience in travel, tropical and environmental medicine.
For the past ten years Mr. Spencer has practiced emergency medicine, most recently at Nash General Hospital and Halifax Regional Medical Center. He has joined Eastern North Carolina Medical Group in Rocky Mount in the practice of Internal Medicine.
Mr. Spencer is a current member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants, Triangle East Physician Extenders Society, Society of Army Physician Assistants, and a life member of the US Army Society of Flight Surgeons.
Mr. Spencer’s special interests include cycling, reading and history. He is also an avid musician. He is a member of several local fraternal organizations.
Mr. Spencer and his wife, Margie, live in Rocky Mount.
